How Hydronic Heating Systems Work

A boiler is the heart of a hydronic heating system. It heats water and sends that water or steam through a closed loop of pipes to radiators, baseboard heaters, or radiant floor tubing. Unlike forced-air systems, there’s no ductwork and no circulating air, which means fewer drafts and more even heat distribution throughout the home.

Proper sizing matters. A heat loss calculation based on your home’s square footage, insulation quality, and window area determines the right output for your system. An undersized boiler can’t keep pace with a Strafford County winter. An oversized unit short-cycles, meaning it fires and shuts off repeatedly before reaching steady-state operation, which reduces efficiency and puts wear on components ahead of schedule.

Zone heating is one of the practical advantages of a boiler-based system. Because the distribution loop can be divided into independently controlled circuits, different areas of the home can be held at different temperatures without running the full system at full output.

Pre-season maintenance is standard practice across New England for good reason. Catching a failing circulator pump or a compromised pressure relief valve in October costs a fraction of what an emergency service call costs in February, when many heating contractors in the region are fully booked.

Common Boiler Problems & the Repair-vs-Replace Decision

Most boiler problems announce themselves clearly. No heat or insufficient heat, unusual noises like banging or kettling, unexplained pressure drops, pilot light or ignition failures, water leaks around the unit, and steadily rising fuel bills are all signs the system needs attention. None of these should be deferred into the heating season.

Carbon monoxide deserves its own mention. It’s an odorless, colorless byproduct of incomplete combustion. A cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue is a safety emergency, not a maintenance item to schedule around convenience. If you have any reason to suspect a combustion issue, leave the home and call for service immediately.

When Repair Makes Sense

A boiler that’s under 15 years old, well-maintained, and experiencing a single isolated failure is generally a good candidate for repair. The key question is the cost of the fix relative to the remaining useful life of the system.

When Replacement Is the Better Answer

Boilers typically last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. When a system is approaching or past that range and requiring repeated repairs, continued investment in aging equipment often costs more than replacing it. AFUE ratings matter here too. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency measures how much fuel a boiler converts to usable heat, and a low-AFUE system running through a full New Hampshire winter can cost noticeably more to operate than a modern high-efficiency replacement. Parts availability is another factor: some components for older systems are no longer manufactured, which means longer wait times and higher costs when something fails.
